The video follows a logical flow that supports learning objectives

Organise the video around explicit intended learning outcomes. Each section, explanation, example and visual should contribute to what learners are expected to know or perform. Remove content that is interesting but unnecessary. This applies the coherence principle: learners generally perform better when extraneous information is excluded.1

Use a structure appropriate to the subject rather than enforcing a rigid template. A useful default may follow BOPPPS or CARD model and consist of a brief orientation, clearly identified sections, explicit transitions and a final synthesis or application prompt.

Break complex explanations into meaningful segments and allow learners to process one segment before moving to the next. A meta-analysis found small-to-moderate positive effects of learner-paced segmentation on retention and transfer.2 Guidance for educational-video production similarly recommends keeping videos focused on their learning goals and using signals to highlight important concepts.3

The duration of the video is concise and reasonable (6 min sweetspot)

Shorter videos boost engagement and learning. A large-scale MOOC study found median viewing times ≈6 minutes, regardless of longer actual length4, and another study showed students watching short (~8 min) videos scored 9% higher than those watching ~55 min lectures.

Brief videos match attention spans better (studies indicate drop-offs after 6-9 min) and encourage active re-engagement. Quality Matters and other experts recommend keeping lessons under ~6-10 min. Short clips can be easily rewatched, supplemented with activities and reused in other learniung paths.

Branded intro/outro is not longer than 3 seconds

Keep any intros/outros extremely short. Use minimal animations or a logo flash of 1-2 seconds if needed. Very short intros avoid losing attention. Viewers generally "want to jump right into content".

Minimising non-instructional sequences eliminates unnecessary delays and prevents early drop-off. Quick branding (e.g. a flash of a logo) can provide professionalism without boredom. Especially when your course contain 30+ videos with exactly the same intro & outro in each.

A brilliant example of the extremely short but still speaking out intro in instructional video is the Google Career Certification courses on Coursera.5

A brief targeted text introduction accompanies the video

Briefly explain the video’s purpose, relevance, intended audience and any required prior knowledge. Use language and examples appropriate to the learners, and avoid repeating the video’s opening narration.6

When the same video is reused across different courses or activities, tailor the introduction to place it in the current learning context and emphasise its specific value for that use.

Color contrast is checked and accessible for texts and visuals

Ensure all on-screen text and visuals have high contrast and are easily distinguishable. For example, use dark text on a light background with a contrast ratio at least 4.5:1.

Sufficient contrast makes text and graphics readable for low-vision and colour-blind learners, and under various lighting. It is an accessibility requirement to accommodate ~8% of men (and 0.5% of women) with colour-vision deficiency. High contrast also reduces eye strain for all users.7

Audio is clear and free from distracting noise

Ensure speech and essential sounds are intelligible, with consistent volume and no clipping, excessive reverberation or background noise that masks the content. Use music and contextual sounds only when they serve a clear instructional purpose.8

Video quality is stable and visual dynamics support learning

Ensure that all learning-relevant details remain clear and legible, without distracting camera movement, blur, lighting changes or compression artefacts. Use changes in shot, pace, animation and visual focus to demonstrate processes, signal structure or direct attention—not merely to make the video appear more dynamic.

Avoid both prolonged static presentation and excessive editing. The appropriate pace and amount of movement depend on the subject, learners and complexity of the material; production polish should never compete with the explanation or introduce unnecessary cognitive load.

Accurate closed captions or subtitles are available

Provide synchronized, selectable closed captions for all speech and meaningful sounds. Review automatically generated captions for accuracy, timing, speaker identification, terminology, numbers and non-speech information. Provide translated subtitles as separate language tracks where needed.910

Where useful, add an interactive transcript that learners can search and use to navigate to specific points in the video. A transcript complements but does not replace synchronized captions.

Essential visual content is explicitly described in the narration

Verbally identify and describe visual information needed to understand the video, including actions, diagrams, data, interface changes and relevant on-screen text. Use precise references instead of phrases such as “as you can see” or “over here,” so the explanation remains understandable without relying entirely on sight.11

Describe only information that contributes to meaning. Where essential visual content cannot be incorporated naturally into the narration, provide a separate audio description or descriptive transcript.

Key outcomes and takeaways accompany the video

Provide a concise list of what the video covers and what learners should understand or be able to do. Keep it visible alongside the video so learners can assess its relevance before watching and quickly revisit the essential points afterwards.12

Include only the central outcomes and ideas. Do not use the summary as a substitute for watching when demonstrations, explanations or context are essential. Support materials should extend access, review or application—not simply duplicate the video. Transcripts improve accessibility and searchability, while active-learning materials can strengthen comprehension and transfer.

Relevant support materials provided with the video

Provide materials that help learners access, review or apply the content, such as a searchable transcript, accessible copies of essential visuals, slides, references, key terminology, worksheets or practical examples.

Where appropriate, include a focused retrieval, reflection or application activity. Keep support materials concise, current and clearly connected to the video’s intended learning outcomes.13

Localized versions are available for target regions

Provide localized content where language or regional context could limit understanding or relevance. Depending on learners’ needs, this may include translated subtitles or transcripts, additional audio tracks, or fully localized video versions.1415

Adapt terminology, examples, units, cultural references and on-screen text where necessary—not only the spoken words. Human-review translations, label each language and locale clearly, and keep all localized versions synchronized when the source video changes.9
